To Darren Hird, Telus Jim Laursen, Industry Canada I wrote a letter dated September 30, 2010 to you explaining my opposition to the proposed cell tower at 4537 Rocky Pt. Road in Metchosin. I had four basic questions in the letter and after receiving a generic response form letter from Telus, nothing from Industry Canada or Knights of Columbus, I still don’t feel at ease with this conflict, nor are my concerns addressed. With all the correspondence, where is the Knights of Columbus? Why are they not facing their neighbours? On my concerns about living close to towers emitting electromagnetic radiation I was told there are no health concerns because the government says so, and reference was made to a half dozen web sites. The word asbestos came to mind as I read this. My second concern was the proximity to the most condensed housing in our community. Issues were reiterated on how this location fits all the mandatory criteria, all the well knowing how openly opposed our community is. On the issue of searching for alternate sites, Telus says they are doing so but if one cannot be found, too bad its going there anyhow, but it will be the decision of Industry Canada. Largely, my concern is the unknown. Effects of electromagnetic radiation remains unknown. Is the Knights of Columbus, Telus and Industry Canada prepared for the possibility of future liability claims alleged to be resulting from radio frequency exposure? Recently the town of Parksville rejected a proposal to have a cell tower on top of their fire hall ( as Metchosin did two years ago ) The city knew they would be subject to these such complaints. In ten years, when the tower is weathered with chipped paint, and is crammed with a dozen transmitters, and the health of local residents is waning, what could be done then ? This tower may effect the health of my 11 year old daughter, who is undergoing chemotherapy for Relapsed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She has already suffered more than most do in a lifetime. I am not willing to take this gamble. I want a future with my family in Metchosin, let alone a friendly one. Please find an alternate site which is a minimum of 500m away from residents. Surely in Metchosin this can be achieved. Concerned, Heather Hamilton 4590 Rocky Point Rd. Victoria, BC V9C 4E5
